A Red Letter Day

A Red Letter Day! The Summer Used Book Sale at Locust Grove is today and through the weekend. I look forward to these twice-a-year sales as the selection of books is quite extraordinary. Lots of history and older hardcover books that I am so delighted to discover.

This historic home (scene of the last month's Jane Austen Festival) receives book donations all year long and I am taking with me today six books from my shelves that I have read and no longer want to keep. I love recycling!

As a bonus to the books, the two fellows who run the sale are compatriots of mine from my days working at an independent bookstore here - now defunct. They do a great job of organizing - all the books are sorted by category. The displays are neat and they are always bringing out 'refills' so the offerings are constantly being refreshed.

Oh, the joys of the hunt!

  3. Used book sales are the best fun ever (I had that typed in all caps, but decided not to inflict the shouting on you). My library hosts a couple a year, but they aren't nearly as extensive as yours sounds. However, they have a used book store that operates year round, and I've found many treasures there so I can't complain. Good luck on the hunt--will you bring back more books than you donate?? (I probably would.)

    1. Hello Lark, Joyce, and Kathy,

Yes, my trip to the sale was quite successful and full of fun. Everyone is in a good mood at a used book sale!

And yes, Kathy, I had a net gain...of course.

  4. Belle yes there is nothing to beat a book sale, oh the anticipation! For three years I was responsible for our local library book sale. These were all donations and not discards from the library shelves and it was truly amazing what came in. As a funds raising for a library on a limited budget it really helped the coffers. Now that someone else is in charge the viewing and buying is so much more fun as opposed to lugging dozens of boxes, squiring them away wherever we could find a free basement, my back is very happy. And as already mentioned I try not to come home with more books than I have donated, its a challenge!

    1. Wow, Tullik, what a job you had. As a former bookseller who has lugged many a box of books, I can appreciate your back-breaking endeavors. I love the donate/buy exchange opportunities of this sale. Helps keep my shelves in good order. The books I took to donate went right out on the tables and I hope they sold quickly.
