An Angela Thirkell Read-A-Thon

Angela Thirkell's Barsetshire

I found at the library an omnibus of three of Angela Thirkell's books: August Folly, Summer Half, and Pomfret Towers. Five hundred pages of Our Ms. Thirkell. These are the next, in order of course, of the Barsetshire novels after High Rising and Wild Strawberries which I have read and delighted in.

So I am going to hold my very own Angela Thirkell Read-A-Thon and settle in for a bit of armchair travel to Barsetshire this weekend.

Note to self - Pick up a couple of cranberry-walnut scones to go with afternoon tea, just to keep your energy up.

I found the following teasers on a website devoted to Ms. Thirkell's books:

August Folly (1936) - Mrs. Palmer stages a Greek play, the actors fall in love, and general misunderstandings and family adventures occur.

Summer Half (1937) - Barsetshire sets the stage for the lovely Rose Pickett and her engagements.

Pomfret Towers (1938) - The Pomfrets and their heir, Gillie Foster, are the centerpiece of this Barsetshire story.

I had better get started! What are you reading this weekend?

  1. Sounds delightful, Belle, and I now have a taste for not only Angela Thirkell, but, for cranberry scones as well. This weekend I hope to read more of Li-Young Lee's poetry, as I came home with four of his books from the library, and I'd best get going on Secret to Happiness for next week's book discussion.

    1. Penny, I hope I don't just eat the scones and forgo the reading! Ha, like that is likely to happen.

Anyway, I am intrigued with Li-Young Lee and will investigate his work.

  2. Sounds like a nice way to fill the weekend! I have read High Rising and The Demon in the House. I Have Wild Strawberries to read next, but I have yet been able to squeeze it into the reading queue--I look forward to hearing what you think of it. She is someone I want to read straight through I think (well in order anyway--but won't be able to read them one after another close together...).

    1. Danielle, I am skipping 'Demon' because that boy, Tony, drove me crazy in 'High Rising', but otherwise I am attempting to read Thirkell's books in order. I loved 'Wild Strawberries'. You can read my thoughts here:

  3. Belle! Due to computer problems my weekend reading is not very inspiring, "Windows 7 for Dummies". My new operating system is a bit of mystery right now I have to get to grips with it and try and find some of my clients files!! On a lighter side I picked up yesterday from local charity shop a nice copy of "The Cunning Little Vixen" I know its a children's story but I have a weakness of anything illustrated by Maurice Sendak. So between bouts of computer induced frustration I shall disappear into Czech forest fantasy.

    1. Forest fantasy is just what one needs when dealing with computers. It took me forever to get used to W7. I don't know why 'they' have to change things so often.
